Why theatre scripts fail naive AI parsing, and how a structure-aware pipeline preserves roles, dialogue, and stage directions.

Most script parsers were built for generic documents, not for live performance. In theatre, a single formatting mistake can turn a character name into dialogue, or split stage directions into spoken lines.

At SurtitleLive, we treat script parsing as a structural problem first, not only a language problem. We model role labels, dialogue blocks, and stage-direction lanes separately before any translation step starts.

This separation matters because downstream tasks depend on it. Cue timing, operator navigation, and multilingual alignment all become unstable when the source structure is noisy. A polished translation layer cannot compensate for broken segmentation.

Our pipeline therefore prioritizes deterministic structure extraction, then context-aware translation. Operators can still override anything, but the baseline arrives in a form that is production-usable instead of requiring a full manual rebuild.
